Chlorine
Chlorine is an important chemical in our day-to-day life and is a major building block for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals has chlorine production plants in The Netherlands, Germany and Sweden. In total we have an annual production capacity of some 1000.000 tonnes, abt 10% of West-European chlorine production.

In practice
In man-made form almost every product made today, benefits from chlorine chemistry. Chlorine contributes to advances in areas as diverse as disinfecting, medicine, public safety and enhancing everyday life. Some 55% of European chemical production depends on chlor-alkali products.

· Many chemicals, plastics and medicines depend on chlorine during the manufacturing process, although the chemical is not contained in the end product.
· Two third of all chlorine is used in the production of plastics, such as PVC, Poly-Urethanes, Epoxy-resins, Teflon, Neoprene etc., for use in construction, automotive, electronic and electrical industries.
· 85% of medicines, including many lifesaving drugs, are made using chlorine chemistry.
· 98% of Western Europe's drinking water is made safe with the help of chlorine. Worldwide waterborne diseases kill 15 million people each year.
· 25% of medical devices contain chlorine, including blood bags, sterile tubing, heart catheters, prosthetics and X-ray films.
Caustic soda is an important co-product of chlorine manufacture. It is used in various industries (e.g. metallurgy, aluminum, glass, soap, detergents and textiles).
